Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line, in partnership with NYC Parks. We raise nearly 100% of the High Line’s annual budget.

Through excellence in operations, stewardship, innovative programming, and world-class design, we seek to engage the vibrant and diverse community on and around the High Line, and to raise the essential private funding to help complete the High Line’s construction and create an endowment for its future operations.

Job description

The director of education is a new position responsible for guiding and overseeing the organizations’ youth, school, and family programs (collectively referred to as “Education Programs”). The director is a member of the High Line’s Public Engagement team, which is dedicated to making the High Line a culturally-relevant, inclusive, and dynamic resource for New York City residents, with particular focus on neighbors from Chelsea, Meatpacking, and Hell’s Kitchen.

The director of education will be responsible for developing a holistic education and engagement program targeted at young New Yorkers up to age 22 and their families and caregivers, with a specific emphasis on traditionally underserved populations. They will offer a learning, programmatic, and community-building approach reflective of New York City’s cultural diversity. This approach should be guided by the institution’s mission, long-range plan, and annual themes through a broad range of interdisciplinary and hands-on experiences.

This is an opportunity to assess and reshape a significant program for the High Line and to have a direct impact on our community and public. The director of education is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the vice president of public engagement and currently supervises a team of three full-time and one part-time staff, with an opportunity to grow in the future.
