Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line, in partnership with NYC Parks. We raise nearly 100% of the High Line’s annual budget.

Through excellence in operations, stewardship, innovative programming, and world-class design, we seek to engage the vibrant and diverse community on and around the High Line, and to raise the essential private funding to help complete the High Line’s construction and create an endowment for its future operations.

The gardener is a full-time, non-exempt, year-round employee of Friends of the High Line and an integral part of Friends of the High Line’s Park Operations team. Under the general supervision of the director of horticulture, the gardener is responsible for the year-round care and maintenance of the High Line’s landscape and shared green spaces. Working interactively with a team of gardeners, custodians, maintenance technicians, and High Line administrators, the gardener’s responsibilities include all aspects of monitoring, caring for, and reporting on designated park zones, including diverse and unique plantings, hardscape elements, and public use of the park.

The gardener is also responsible for the daily oversight of the gardens designed by Piet Oudolf, in coordination with lead landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations. The design evokes a natural landscape employing a matrix-style planting of native and exotic perennials and woody plants that changes over time. To grow plants 30 feet above ground, the elevated High Line gardens are attended to with finest horticultural methods, all while working within the unique opportunities and challenges of the space.
