The High Line is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 to save the historic, elevated rail line from demolition. After a significant and successful campaign the organization converted the rail line, which is owned by the City of New York, into a vibrant public park in partnership with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. With an annual visitorship of nearly 8 million people to its park, the High Line strives to provide an essential, accessible public space for the residents of New York, as well as to be a community asset that benefits our surrounding neighborhood.
For the last ten years, the High Line has organized a considerable roster of public art and community engagement programs that serve New Yorkers of all ages. Working with emerging and established artists across genres-- from sculpture and video to performance and spoken word-- the High Line has been a site of creative experimentation and a commissioner of new works by exciting voices in contemporary art. As we near our 20th anniversary, we want to continue strengthening this work and creating a dynamic set of opportunities for the diversity of our audiences and constituents to engage with the artists, projects, and ideas that our public art programs put forward.
We’re looking for a full time Public Engagement Manager for our Programs Division to perform a range of artistic, administrative, logistical and communications activities as main administrator of our performance and programming activities.
The Public Engagement Manager plays a critical role in all aspects of the planning, production, execution and evaluation of a robust yearly performance and programming calendar. The person in this role will be a key member of a larger team tasked with creating opportunities that make the park more inclusive and engaging to local audiences by stewarding efforts which include a range of artist-led, community-centered experiences, programs and performances.
This position will report to the Vice President of Public Engagement, and work in close collaboration with the new Public Programs Producer.
- Act as main point of contact for artists and prospects.
- Serve as partner to the Vice President of Public Engagement’s vision by researching and proposing potential talent, projects and partners; as well as cultivating and supporting the High Line’s artist community.
- Coordinate artist engagement -- Schedule and attend phone calls and walkthroughs; coordinate follow-up communications with viable talent, partners, and vendors. Ensure artist term sheets are properly executed.
- Track and analyze data -- Track and manage RSVPs and attendance. Create and manage surveys of public experience. Compile and analyze data for various use (such as grant applications, internal and external reporting, etc).
- Manage program budget -- Track payments and financial records for all associated artist and production expenses.
- Project management -- Generate and/or maintain the department’s project management tools (planning calendar, program checklists, artists databases, etc.) and other tasks as necessary.
Logistics and Production
- Oversee the planning and seamless execution of all public programs on and off the High Line, year round.
- Act as bridge between artists and the High Line’s Production department, and collaborate with Production department in defining floor plans, tech riders, run of shows, staffing plans for events, etc. This also includes scheduling, training, and supervising event crews. At the High Line event crews are intergenerational-- including Park Rangers, volunteers, professional security firms, and members of our Youth Program.
- Research, fact-check, write and edit all program-related materials, both public facing (for printed and digital use), as well as internal working documents (program briefs for artists, graphic designers, among others)
- Work closely with Communications team in creating the seasonal marketing and press calendar and pieces, including seasonal program calendars, website event posts, blog posts, social media posts, press releases, flyers, handouts, signage and other collateral materials.
- Coordinate event documentation in collaboration with Communications department .
- 4 - 6 years’ experience in cultural programming and production
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and systematic arts professional
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple time-sensitive projects without prompting, in a fast-paced, complex environment.
- Project Manager experience with the ability to coordinate and communicate with a large group and varying opinions.
- Ability to take initiative, work autonomously, be forward-thinking, adaptable and flexible, as well as be enthusiastic about the High Line, public engagement, public space, and cultural programming a must!
- Ability to work well in a diverse team, demonstrating clear, efficient and respectful communication. Strong interpersonal skills, with a positive demeanor.
- Non-profit experience and working knowledge of NYC-based cultural organizations and artists.
- Ability and interest in working outdoors in all safe weather conditions.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. Ability and interest in attending shows elsewhere as needed for artist research and support.
- Excellent writing skills, and a high level of computer literacy, including strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to effectively set up and manage systems such as Eventbrite, SurveyMonkey and Asana or other project management tools.
- Demonstrated success and experience working with volunteers, youth, and diverse populations.
- Interest and level of comfort with statistical analysis and projection.
